Our Blood (G. 8.30.2013)

Our blood survives
Mixed with yours
Continents once joined
Divided by ancient wars
Settlers invited
And uninvited
Pierced our costal shores
Glad to have escaped
Distant tyrannies
Mixing destinies
At first accepted
Only what was given
Then tainted hearts
Took and took
Until we were driven
Scattered, shattered
Histories and lies
Ignoring our cries
To preserve our medicines
Your god knew better?
Our ancestors grew weary
Of the "settlers"
And hid away
In our DNA
But you will never kill
What is real
Preserved in soil and song
There all along
With the stars and skies
Our blood survives.
